Apple finally cleared all the rumors and announced that they plan to release a mixed reality headset, augmented reality (AR) glasses, and augmented reality contact lenses by 2022, 2025 & 2030 respectively.
Apple’s plans for a mixed reality headset and augmented reality glasses have been in the news for quite some time. Still, the augmented reality contact lenses seem to be new. The information shared by industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the Cupertino-based company’s mixed reality headset will come with 15 camera modules.
Rumors and Leaks
Starting with the rumored mixed reality headset from Apple, analyst Kuo says that the headset will come with 15 camera modules to enable advanced-level augmented reality. 8 of these modules are said to be for AR video experiences, 6 modules are said to allow for “innovative biometrics,” and 1 module for detecting the environment to position objects in a particular scene.
The analyst also suggested that the headset’s components will be provided by a Taiwanese company that supplies camera lens modules for devices. The mixed reality headset could use Sony’s Micro-OLED displays along with optical modules.
Apple has not shared any information on any of these rumored products. With some of the predictions going many years into the future, it’s safe to say that things will likely change and evolve along the way.
Products & Pricing
Kuo mentioned that Apple’s mixed reality headphone prototypes currently weigh between 200 and 300 grams. However, the final weight will be reduced to about 100 or 200 grams, much lighter than other existing virtual reality devices.
Due to their complex design, Kuo expects the headphones to cost about $ 1,000 in the United States, in line with the price of a “high-end iPhone .”
According to Kuo, Apple’s headset will be able to provide a “significantly better immersion experience than existing virtual reality products .”
Big Challenge for Apple
Although VR headsets have become somewhat mainstream in gaming, still a wide-scale adoption has not happened. The main challenge has been low-resolution and high setup costs. Even though new Oculus and other VR headsets have resolved this to some extent the lack of content still remains a problem.
A company like Apple could be a game-changer in this arena, with the kind of resources & a loyal customer base they can be the push for AR and VR to every consumer.
According to the Analyst, Apple could release the Mixed Reality Headset in 2022, and the AR Glasses in 2025. AR glasses are said to provide an optical see-through AR experience that will be more like a “mobile” product than the mixed reality headset. Apple is also reportedly said to launch AR contact Lens in 2030.
